Paul Delaroche (1797-1856),
celebrated for the technical precision of his work,
reportedly declared on seeing his first daguerreotype,
"From today, painting is dead."
The fear that photography would replace painting
was felt primarily by those who, like Delaroche,
understood painting's purpose within a fairly
narrow concept of visual representation.
